Airworthy

What is the meaning of the term "airworthy"? Who is responsible for the airworthiness of an aircraft, verses who is responsible to ensure the aircraft is in condition for safe flight? The owner or operator has a role, as do the technician(s), and the Pilot-In-Command (PIC).
